MP visit this week

25th August 2023

Helen Morgan MP visited the food bank on Monday this week and she stayed with us for two hours. Helen and her colleague were able to chat with volunteers, agency workers from Women’s Aid, Citizens Advice and Samaritans, and even a visitor who, graciously, allowed Helen to briefly interrupt her meeting with the Citizens Advisor.
Helen expressed anger at how the situation is so challenging for an increasing number of households. She has also visited other food banks in Shropshire this week and last week. Helen appeared genuinely passionate about what is happening in our communities and had a good grasp of the unaffordability of Universal Credit; the reliance of the Government on the third sector in keeping people afloat, and asked all the right questions. Overall, it was a very successful visit.
Thank you to all those who chatted with Helen to give her the widest picture of what we do here. Helen and her colleague offered to help at Christmas with packing of food hampers – we shall hold them to that! See below Helen Morgan’s Facebook post about her visit:
“A big shout out to all the volunteers doing a brilliant job at Oswestry and Borders Foodbank .👏👏 It’s a shame that foodbanks are needed but they really do provide a lifeline for lots of local families. Demand means the foodbank needs more donations – so if you are able to help then please do so.”
