Trussell Trust Response to the Autumn Statement

27th November 2023

🚨 Your voices have been heard!
In Wednesday’s Autumn Statement, the UK government announced they will increase benefits in line with inflation.
This will ease some of the pressures driving millions of people to food banks. đź’š

It is fantastic to see that the Government have made some steps towards supporting people facing hardship, but with food banks still seeing record numbers coming through their doors, there is still work to be done.

Helen Barnard, Director of Policy, Research and Impact at the Trussell Trust, said:

“The Trussell Trust warmly welcomes the UK Government’s decision to uprate benefits by inflation, as well as significantly increase Local Housing Allowance which many people rely on to help pay their rent. Together, these steps will ease some of the pressures which have been driving so many people into poverty and to the doors of food banks.
However, while these measures are extremely welcome, we know that even with this boost Universal Credit will not meet the costs of the essentials. People on the lowest incomes are still facing significant challenges, with a rising tide of hunger and debt which has been pushing food banks to breaking point.”
Whilst food banks will continue to do all they can to support people on the lowest incomes, it’s the UK Government’s duty to protect people from severe hardship.  Thank you for standing with us and signing our petition that calls on UK political party leaders to support the introduction of an Essentials Guarantee.
If you have not already done so, you can sign our ‘Guarantee the Essentials’ petition here 👉 http://bit.ly/Our-Essentials
We will not stop until everyone has enough money for the essentials.
Until then, will you help your local food bank continue to support people who turn to them?
Food banks are seeing record levels of need – your support has never been more important. By donating food directly to your local food bank, you will provide immediate support to your community while we work together to build a future where everyone can afford life’s essentials.
Thank you for your support,
The Trussell Trust.
